He was born in Mexico City. His apprenticeship was self-taught and mainly covered engraving, drawing and sculpture. He became known internationally from his exhibitions in Washington 1954, Paris 1955 and in New York in 1957. In 1959 he obtained the First Prize in Drawing at the V Biennial in Sao Paulo, the First International Prize for Engraving at the I Triennial of New Delhi 1968 and the Prize of the World Council of the Engraving in 1984 among others. In 1991 he was awarded the Knightly Order of Arts and Letters by the French government and in Mexico he was named Emeritus Creator in 1993. Author of what is considered the manifesto of the rupture between emerging artists and the institution in the that muralism and the EMP had become, José Luis Cuevas represented the change that took place in Mexican art in the second half of the 20th century.
